Abstract
Despite a diffused tendency to identify meaningful and unique events that could have, by themselves, the power to change the habitual way of living, one of the most important contributions of Erickson's work and hypnosis, in general, has been the amount of attention paid to little, apparently unimportant cues and details.
Minimal cues are those indicators, seemingly trivial and irrelevant, of a specific state of mind or internal processes. Since only careful investigation can reveal the particular connections between these indicators and meaningful behavioral responses, usually minimal cues are not considered a signal by untrained observers.
On the contrary, once used consciously by the hypnotist, they prove to be a beneficial diagnostic and therapeutic instrument. The intense attention paid by the hypnotist to the minimal cues should be considered another crucial therapeutic factor: the subject will consciously or unconsciously respond to the intensity of this attention, increasing cooperation in the therapeutic relationship.
Because of their profound impact and implications, minimal cues can produce enormous and often unexpected changes in a person's life.
Clinical cases, videos, and demonstrations will be presented.
Learning Objectives
1. To list ten different possible utilization of minimal cues in the hypnotic process
2. To recognize both the subject’s and the hypnotist’s minimal cues
3. To learn how to follow seven different guidelines to use minimal cues in hypnosis
