Interoception in Hypnotherapy:
Working on dissociation, alexithymia, and emotional regulation

Abstract
Interoception, quoting Lisa Feldman Barrett (2021), can be called "The Secret Ingredient." Extensive scientific evidence supports its central role in the emotional experience (Khalsa et al., 2018) and in the sense of Self and body ownership (Chen et al., 2021).
Through hypnotic phenomena, we can observe the nervous system's plasticity in many areas (e.g., time perception, memory processes, behavioral modifications) and use it for therapeutic objectives. The changes in interoceptive processes can underlie sensory and somatic hypnotic phenomena and be related to emotional and motor responses. We must also consider minimal cues as key signals to explore interoceptive modifications with the patient.
Clinical cases will be presented, and experiential activities and demonstrations will be shared in the workshop.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Observe, detect, and utilize the plasticity of the interoceptive processes in hypnotherapy;
• Apply hypnotic techniques based on interoception to therapeutic work on dissociation, alexithymia, and emotional regulation;
• Co-create with patients a Hypnotic Interoceptive Training to improve their capacity to perceive, feel, appraise, and regulate sensations, emotions, and feelings.
Short CV
Maria Cristina Perica, MSc, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist, specialization as hypnosis teacher, Supervisor of mental health professionals, and Teacher of Hypnotherapy. Maria Cristina is also experienced in managing Mental Health Projects founded by European grants and has directed the Training Programs for Mental Health professionals for two non-profit organizations, supporting digital innovation in the organization and evaluation of mental health services.
Maria Cristina has been a Member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Hypnosis since 2016 and a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal "Ipnosi – Rivista Italiana di Ipnosi Clinica Sperimentale." She is also a Teacher in the Hypnotherapy Training Program at the Italian School of Hypnosis and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (Clinical and Ericksonian Hypnosis, Hypnotherapeutic Processes, Group Hypnosis) and for the Master in Hypnosis and Ericksonian Psychotherapy for Psychotherapists.
Speaker and Workshop facilitator since 2009 at National and International Congresses, author of articles and chapters of books, Maria Cristina's areas of interest are innovations in hypnotherapy (recent contributions about neurodiversity-tailored hypnosis and virtual reality hypnosis).
She is currently an ISH BOD member starting from July 2024.
