ISH Monthly Masterclass

Self-hypnosis to decrease risks of burnout and compassion fatigue for health care workers

By Dr. Nicole Ruysschaert

Date: 20th July 2022

Time: 5:00pm - 8:00pm CET

Health care professionals, medical doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, dentists are particularly at risk of burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization. The Covid 19 pandemic, the Ukranian war, the additional workload adds on the already stressful life many have to face. Exposure to human suffering in medical and therapeutic interactions affects health care workers on a subtle level, where mirror neurons play an important role.

As you all are very aware now of the importance of vaccination to prevent infections, the good news is that there are some practices to increase your resilience, acting as a kind of “vaccination” that protect you against stress or overwhelming experiences. Gentry and Baranowsky describe five professional resiliency skills or “antibodies”, namely (1) self- regulation (2) intentionality (3) self-validation (4) connection and (5) self-care which contribute to “immunity” useful in stressful live circumstances. You will experience how these skills can be mobilized by (self) hypnosis.

In the workshop you will have the opportunity to practice different useful methods to be better prepared to deal with stressful life circumstances in challenging times. (Self) hypnosis is helpful to self-regulate (1) and develop a healthy balance. Emotion regulation is the main ingredient of an efficient stress management strategy. Objectives and goals, making sense of what you do (2) and feeling valued (3) is a source of energy. You will experience how different mind/body/imagery practices help you to stay grounded and connected (4) in different circumstances. As all the exercises can be integrated in your daily life, there are useful companions for your selfcare (5). Original practices with mirroring hands, some Tai Chi practices, creative imagery with dancing flowers and many more will make this workshop a nice easy going way of self-discovery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • To use hypnosis for emotional and physiological self-regulation and finding a balance in your life.
  • To develop resiliency by activating “antibodies” against stress
  • To reframe adversity as a learning opportunity
  • To discover how and where you find compassion satisfaction in your work To discover the importance of social support and networking

Compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, empathy, hypnosis, mirror neurons, resilience, positive engagement
